Creating a Midsummer Character
Knowing The Period
Midsummer is a bit more demanding
than most Chronicles, in that you need to know a little about
the era in which it is set.
Read some of the historical
information on this site for an over-view. Otherwise, read
Dickens or even better watch some period tv adaptations. I'm
not a fanatic about historical accuracy, but to really get inside
your character, it helps to know the times.
Characters
Midsummer will be more of a traditional
vampire or vampire-hunting story - more Bram Stoker than Anne
Rice, although that's not set in stone.
1845 is the end of the Romantic period,
and Midsummer is a gothic horror/melodrama - at least, on the
surface. There are greater depths of horror and strangeness here
than Wilkie Collins ever dared...
The Game
Player Characters certainly should
start as Mortals - I hear complaints, but honestly, it
will be more fun this way! Bear in mind, there is some scope
to allow characters like:
Garou
(or kinfolk), Magi, Changelings, Hedge Witches,
Hunters (Members of the Society of Leopold), members of
the Arcanum
(see my special rules for playing Arcanum characters - they have
extra powers), and even Ghouls
(there are independent ghouls around, but they are not very nice
people!)
Obviously the party is going to have
to be balanced so anything like this must be discussed with me.
Interaction
Next, I'm going to be more strict
about making the group interact and work together. Together we
will work out some kind of framework of how the characters know
each other, and backgrounds stories as to why they will work
together.
