Midsummer is centred around the lives and fortunes of the Cavendish family of the mid 19th century; Dukes of Devonshire, and one of the most economically and politically powerful families in the country. For good reason the Cavendish name is found on streets and buildings throughout Britain and the Empire - their vast family fortunes could sway the fate of millions, be it plantation slaves, clerks in Bengal, or Midlands factory workers.
